We’re sure many of you are aware of the events happening around the world at the time of this news release. While we are not the official harbinger of Pride, we can tell you what we have seen from our community: support, understanding of oppression, love, allyship.
To many, Pride month is just the month where we celebrate the LGBT+. Corporations turn out in rainbows, logos change, festivals happen, etc. Pride month is actually the anniversary of our own riots. As of this posting, it has been 51 years since the Stonewall riots. Stonewall was a pinnacle turning point for LGBT+ rights. Our rights did not come overnight necessarily, and up until 2015 we were not able to marry nationwide in the United States.
The events happening around the world and in your newsfeed recently should not be taken lightly. If it weren't for rioting, many of us would not have the rights we have today. We post about Stonewall specifically because it is June and we are officially celebrating Pride. (Although, many within our social circles have taken Pride as a back seat and are instead rightfully focusing on Black Lives Matter.) While the world has changed, there is still a lot more room for growth. Now, more than anything, it's important to be the ally to other oppressed groups and show our support. Listen, learn, stand up and use your voice when needed.
Happy Pride Month, all.
