About OutReach, Inc.

OutReach LGBTQ+ Community Center offers a variety of ways to reach seniors and provide services for social and learning activities as well as trainings for caregivers and more!

The OutReach LGBT Senior Advocate is a position at OutReach that specifically connects with LGBT seniors and assist them in finding services, and work with senior serving agencies in Dane County to ensure that they are welcoming and culturally competent to provide services to LGBT seniors. Ticia Kelsey currently serves in this role.

The Am I Welcome Here project was created by OutReach to expand and support existing senior service agencies in Dane County with LGBTQ inclusive practices.

The LGBTQ 50 Plus Alliance, formally called the LGBT Senior Alliance, is committed to connecting LGBTQ adults with programs and services in our community. The LGBTQ 50+ Alliance is sponsored by OutReach Community Center and the Madison Senior Center.

OutReach has compiled a Resource List of valuable website links we hope will provide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults and their families with the knowledge needed to help navigate the maze of LGBT information available today. OutReach LGBTQ+ Community Center and the LGBTQ+ AODA Advocate, in collaboration with our community partners and resources, are committed to advocate for LGBTQ+ community members who seek support at any stage of alcohol or other drug addiction in a variety of ways: The OutReach LGBTQ+ AODA Advocate builds relationships and collaborates with Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction (AODA) providers in Madison and Dane County. Together with our recovery partners, we develop programs, sponsor recovery support groups, provide referrals, and advocate for our LGBTQ+ community struggling with AODA issues. Linda Lenzke currently serves in this role.

OutReach works with LGBTQ+ Recovery Partners to develop programming, direct and receive client referrals, partner with recovery coaches, and inform the public of the services available to our LGBTQ+ AODA community. OutReach has compiled a Recovery Resource List, featuring website links to OutReach LGBTQ+ sponsored meetings, Madison and Dane County 12-Step and recovery meetings, and mental health and AODA community resources to assist with prevention, treatment, and ongoing sobriety support.

Outreach also offers Transgender Services. Transitioning on the job can be a very stressful and overwhelming process for many transgender people. Today, more and more companies are adding protection for transgender people to their anti-discrimination policies. In Wisconsin, Madison and Milwaukee have laws protecting gender identity and gender expression in their anti-discrimination policies. While this is a very positive step, there may still be challenges along your way. We have a transgender advocate and an openly gender-queer Program Director that can assist in conversations and provide many referrals.

Willma's Fund is available by appointment for any LGBT* individual in Madison/Dane County WI by calling 920-605-5993. If the Program Director can take your call immediately the assessment process can begin right away but they may need to take your call later. If there is a wait list, you will be informed on the next time the Program Director can call you.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all assessments are done over the phone and not in the office. The assessment takes about a half hour to 45 minutes to process and go through. After that, we can determine how best we can help.

Things to know about Willma’s Fund assistance:

  • We cannot guarantee exact amounts we can help with or what we can do until we have an assessment.
  • Willma's Fund only assists with short-term, immediate needs.
  • We cannot do long term stays at hotels or pay both a security deposit and rent for permanent housing.
  • We do not guarantee amounts we can give for rent or a security deposit.
  • If we provide a hotel room for clients they must also abide by the rules of the hotel or they forfeit help from Willma's Fund.
  • We only help with one financial gift per year per client.
  • We do not find places to live for clients, they must do the leg work and if they are offered a place to live, we must have a copy of the lease so we know where to send a check to.
  • If clients are in need of a hotel instead we have a maximum of days we can do that. We would determine through an assessment.
  • An assessment over the phone or in person needs to be done to determine the amount we can give or the help that is needed.
  • We are only budgeted a certain amount for each month as the fund continues to be used. Sometimes we have to suspend the fund after a certain point each month if funds are low.
  • While some of our funding is to provide assistance for homelessness or low income, we do not turn people away if they are in crisis. If there is a significant financial strain due to factors in people's lives, we will assist them regardless of income level.

Visit us on Facebook! Willma's Fund messaging is available during OutReach work hours, Mon-Fri 12pm to 7pm. An assessment must be done over the phone. You can ask to speak about our general services, however. Additional Information/Non-SpecificPlease contact Steve Starkey (Executive Director) and Mark Hargrove (Program Director) for any questions or inquires.
